Best Shopify upsell apps: pick by surface, not by rank
Most “best Shopify upsell apps” pages dump twenty logos. That is a shopping list, not a plan. You need one owner per place the shopper still has a cart—and a 14-day number that can fire the app.
Who this is for
Merchants who searched “best upsell apps Shopify” after AOV stalled, or after a freelancer said “just add an upsell app.” If you are still launching, install reviews and a way to talk to buyers first—see apps for a new store. Then come back here before you stack three AOV widgets.
You typed “best upsell apps Shopify” because someone sold you a top-20 list. That list is the trap. The best Shopify upsell app is the one that owns one place the shopper still has a cart: the product page, the cart drawer, checkout (Plus for the three steps), Thank you, or the single post-purchase page Shopify lets you pick. Start with Search & Discovery for “you may also like.” Add a cart gift app if you sell add-ons. Add a bundles app if you sell kits. Two drawers is how AOV stays flat and the theme gets slow.
How this was researched
Checked 26 August 2026 against live App Store listings, Shopify Help Center on product bundles and Search & Discovery recommendations, and shopify.dev on post-purchase product offers (one selected app). Icons come from each public listing on apps.shopify.com. We use two Oxify listings as worked examples because they split the two jobs stores mix up: cart-drawer gifts vs catalog bundles. That is not a paid #1 ranking of the App Store. Price, plan, and reviews change—confirm on the live page. Admin banners win if they disagree with this essay.
Key takeaways
- Best means one owner per surface, not the logo with the most blog mentions.
- Related products start in Search & Discovery. Help Center: one complementary-products block per product page.
- Kits need a bundles app. Shopify says you must install one to sell product bundles.
- Cart gifts and catalog bundles are two jobs. Two apps that both own the cart is a fight, not a stack.
- In-checkout upsells on information / shipping / payment are Plus. Thank you blocks are broader. Details in checkout customization.
- Shopify lets you pick one post-purchase offer app in checkout settings. A Thank you widget is not that page.
- Run 14 days. Keep the app only if average order value or attach rate moves. Clicks on a widget are not a win.
What people mix up: upsell, cross-sell, bundle
Say you already sold the tee. The fight is where you ask for the next thing.
- Upsell: a better or extra version of what they came for. “Add the bottle of wash” next to the shirt.
- Cross-sell: a related item. Socks with the tee.
- Bundle: two or more products sold as a set. Tee + socks as one kit, often cheaper together.
- Free gift: an extra item when the cart hits a dollar or quantity rule.
- Post-purchase: they already paid. You ask again before Thank you, or on Thank you. Those are not the same page.
Apps slap all five words on one listing. Your ledger should not. Write the job in one line. Then pick the surface.
The week three AOV apps did nothing
A store selling tees added three “boost AOV” apps in seven days. One replaced the cart. One drew a second cart. One pasted a script Shopify is retiring on Thank you.
Shoppers tapped the bag icon and got two panels. The gift bar fought the theme’s free-shipping note. Checkout still worked. The extra pair of socks did not sell. The product page got slower.
The fix was not a fourth app. It was one drawer, one offer (socks at a cart threshold), and Search & Discovery for “complete the look” on the product page. That is the whole thesis of this page.
If two apps both “do upsells,” you have a conflict, not a stack.
The surface map (this is the ranking)
Rank apps by where they sit. Not by a blog’s numbered list.
| Surface | What “best” looks like | Plan check |
|---|---|---|
| Product page | One complementary block, or one add-on widget—not both screaming | Any plan (theme must support the block) |
| Cart / mini-cart / drawer | One cart UX. Gifts, frequently-bought-together, shipping goal | Any plan |
| Information, shipping, payment | In-checkout offers and fields | Plus |
| Thank you / Order status | One extra offer or survey—not three | Basic or higher |
| Post-purchase page (after pay, before Thank you) | One selected app in checkout settings | Confirm in Admin; not the same as a Thank you block |
Write those five rows in a note. Put an app name in at most two rows. If a listing claims product page, cart, checkout, Thank you, and post-purchase, you still pick which rows you will actually turn on. The rest stay off.
Start here: Search & Discovery, then a bundles app if you sell kits
Why first: you already paid for Shopify. Related products are a recommendation job, not a second cart.
The Search & Discovery listing is Shopify’s tool for search, filters, and product recommendations. Help Center: complementary products are items often bought in addition to the one on the page. You can pick up to 10 complementary products per product. Compatible themes get a complementary-products block. You can have only one of those blocks on a product page.
If your theme has no complementary block, do not install a second “you may also like” app until you check the theme editor. A lot of “upsell” installs are just a missing theme section.
Why not enough: Search & Discovery does not turn three SKUs into one discounted kit. Shopify’s product bundles help page is blunt: to create product bundles, you must have a bundles app installed.
Shopify Bundles is the first-party listing for fixed bundles and multipacks. Use it when the kit is simple: three bars of soap, a two-pack, a set you curate once. If you need quantity breaks, mix-and-match, or “build your own box,” that is a different listing—see the bundles job below.

Two jobs most “best of” lists smash together
This is the content gap. Ranked roundups treat every AOV app as the same product. They are not.
Job A — Cart drawer, gifts, product-page add-ons
You sell one hero product. You want a slide-out cart that still looks like your store. You want a free gift at $50. You want “add the bottle” on the product page. You might want a Thank you offer after they pay.
That is a cart and offer app. One drawer. Hide or replace the theme cart so you do not get two bag icons.
Worked example from the live listing Oxify Cart Drawer & Upsell (App Store handle still reads ia-cart-drawer-free-gifts—trust the title on the page). As of 26 August 2026 the listing describes:
- A slide cart drawer with cart upsell, in-cart upsell, cross-sell, and frequently-bought-together
- Product-page upsell widgets and product add-ons
- Post-purchase, checkout, and Thank you upsell (read which page it actually uses in your plan)
- Reward progress bars, free-shipping goals, sticky cart
The listing showed Built for Shopify and a free plan. Paid tiers were on the page. We do not paste prices here. They go stale. Open the listing.
Job B — Quantity breaks, BOGO, mix-and-match, build-your-own
You sell “buy 3, save.” You sell mix-and-match packs. You sell a box the customer fills. That is inventory math and discount rules, not a prettier cart.
Worked example from the live listing Oxify Bundle, Upsells & BYOB. As of 26 August 2026 the listing describes:
- Quantity breaks and tiered pricing / volume discounts
- BOGO, Buy X Get Y, and free-gift bundles applied without a code
- Fixed bundles, mix-and-match sets, and build-your-own bundle (BYOB)
- Combo kits and quantity deals aimed at order value
The listing’s own description leads with “Free Shopify bundles app.” Confirm the live price grid. Built for Shopify was on the page when we checked.
Two jobs. Two listings. Icons from apps.shopify.com. Research both; do not turn on every widget in both.
Need both jobs? Fine. Still one cart owner. The bundles app can price the kit. The drawer app can show the cart. If both try to be the cart, you are back to week-one chaos.
Want a different vendor? Use the same split. Open two listings. Ask: who owns the cart DOM, and who owns the bundle discount? If both answers are “we do,” pick one and leave.
Checkout, Thank you, and the one post-purchase page
The word “upsell” in an App Store title does not tell you the page. Read the surface.
- Product page and cart — storefront apps. Any plan, if the theme can hold the block or drawer.
- Thank you / Order status — app blocks in the checkout editor. Basic and higher, not Starter. See the checkout essay.
- Information, shipping, payment — in-checkout app blocks. Plus.
- Post-purchase interstitial — after they pay, before Thank you. Shopify’s product-offers docs: merchants with more than one such app select which app appears in checkout settings. You do not get two of those pages.
Non-Plus stores still using extra scripts on Thank you face a dated upgrade line. Do not paste a new upsell snippet into Additional scripts. That is a deletion surface, not a growth hack.
Checkout Blocks is Shopify’s own block app for banners and content on checkout, Thank you, and Order status. It is a layout tool. It is not a full AOV engine. Confirm Plus vs non-Plus limits on the listing.
Checkout layout, not a second cart. Confirm your plan on the live listing.
Shop Pay is part of the deal. If an app’s setup says “turn off Shop Pay so the upsell works,” treat that as a conversion cost. Test a Shop Pay order on a phone before you call the install done.
Where upsell apps collide
These fights show up in the theme editor, not in the App Store search bar.
- Two cart drawers — theme cart plus app cart, or two app carts. One bag icon. One panel.
- Two “frequently bought together” rails on the same product page. Search & Discovery already used its one complementary block. A second app adds another carousel. Pick one.
- Two bundles apps both writing discounts. You will not know which rule fired. Customers will.
- Gift bar plus theme free-shipping bar — two progress bars, two stories. Keep one.
- Thank you offer plus post-purchase interstitial plus email upsell in the same hour. That is nagging, not merchandising. Pick the moment you will measure.
- Paste-in checkout JavaScript — conflicts with Checkout Extensibility and Shop Pay. Refuse it. Same rule as choosing apps without slowing the store.
The 14-day AOV test
Most listings offer a trial. Use all of it. Do not run three offers at once. You will not know what worked.
- Day 1. Duplicate the live theme unless the app is admin-only. Install one app. Turn on one embed. Hide the extra cart if the app is the new drawer.
- Day 1, still. Write the offer in one sentence. Example: “Socks at $12 when the cart holds a tee.” Or: “3 bars for the price of a small discount.” Not both.
- Days 2–10. Watch average order value, the attach rate of the offer SKU, and add-to-cart on mobile. Ignore vanity clicks on the widget.
- Day 11. Place a Shop Pay order on a phone. Open Thank you. Confirm the extra offer did not break tracking pixels. Pixels belong in customer events, not in leftover scripts. See checkout.
- Day 14. If AOV or attach rate did not move, uninstall like you mean it. Check the theme for leftover embeds. Check scopes you no longer need.
Do not invent a “20% lift” from a vendor case study and paste it into your board. Your catalog is not their catalog. Fourteen days of your own checkout is the study.
Do this tonight
- Name the surface in one word: product, cart, Thank you, or post-purchase.
- Name the job in one line: gift, kit, or related product.
- Open Search & Discovery if the job is related products.
- Open the cart listing if the job is a drawer or gift bar.
- Open the bundles listing if the job is a kit or volume price.
- Schedule the uninstall date before you click Install.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best upsell app for Shopify?
The best Shopify upsell app is the one that owns one surface you can name: product page, cart drawer, Thank you, or the single post-purchase page Shopify lets you pick. There is no official #1. Start with Search & Discovery for related products. Add a cart-gift app if you sell add-ons. Add a bundles app if you sell kits. Do not install two cart drawers.
Do I need Shopify Plus for upsells?
No for product-page widgets and cart drawers. Thank you and Order status app blocks need Basic or higher. App blocks on information, shipping, and payment are Plus. A true post-purchase page after pay and before Thank you is a different extension. Confirm the plan line on the live listing and in Settings → Checkout.
Can I use two Shopify cart drawer apps?
You can install two. You should not. Two drawers fight the theme mini-cart, double the JavaScript, and confuse the tap target. Pick one cart UX. If the theme already has a strong cart, add offers inside it or pick one app drawer and hide the theme cart.
Is Shopify Search & Discovery enough for upsells?
It is enough for “you may also like” and complementary products on the product page, on themes that support those blocks. Help Center says you can have only one complementary products block on a product page. It does not sell a discounted kit as one bundle. That job needs a bundles app.
What is the difference between a cart upsell and a Shopify bundle?
A cart upsell is a second item offered after the shopper already picked one: a gift at a cart threshold, a frequently-bought-together add-on, a Thank you offer. A bundle is two or more products sold as a set, often with quantity breaks or mix-and-match. Shopify Help Center says you need a bundles app to create product bundles. Mixing both jobs in two apps that both own the cart is how you get two drawers.
How many post-purchase upsell apps can I run?
Shopify documents one selected app for post-purchase product offers. If two apps both ship that extension, you pick which one shows in checkout settings. Thank you page blocks are a different surface. Read the listing for which page it actually uses.
What to do next
Open the two live listings that match the jobs: Oxify Cart Drawer & Upsell for drawer and gifts, Oxify Bundle, Upsells & BYOB for kits and volume prices. Compare price and recent reviews on the page, not on a screenshot. Duplicate the theme. Turn on one offer. Measure AOV for 14 days. If you still need checkout-plan rules, read what you can customize at checkout. If the stack is already noisy, use the install protocol before you add anything else.
